New York:United Nations South Korea has strongly condemned the recent attacks by Yemen's Houthi rebels that have targeted civilian infrastructure and threatened commercial shipping in the Red Sea. The country is calling on the United Nations Security Council to enhance sanctions to prevent weapons from reaching the group.
According to Yonhap News Agency, South Korean Ambassador to the United Nations Cha Ji-hoon made these remarks during a Security Council debate on the Middle East. Cha warned that the continued attacks by the Houthis pose significant threats to global peace, maritime security, and energy supplies. He emphasized the urgent need for the council to act decisively to halt the supply of weapons to the Houthis.
The ambassador highlighted the recent attacks on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh as part of the escalating tensions in the Middle East. These attacks included two consecutive strikes last week, resulting in 14 deaths and over 300 injuries, according to foreign media reports.
The Seoul foreign ministry also expressed its condemnation of the attacks, stating that targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure is completely unacceptable. Ambassador Cha further voiced concern over threats to navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, urging diplomatic efforts to maintain safe passage through this vital waterway.
In addressing wider instability in the region, Cha called on all parties to adhere to the Gaza peace plan, ensure the unobstructed delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza, and cease hostilities in Lebanon.
