Toyohashi:South Korea: South Korea secured five gold medals at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on Sunday. The baseball team extended the country's gold medal-winning streak to five, while a teenage skateboarder achieved South Korea's first gold in the sport.
According to Yonhap News Agency, South Korea has now accumulated 21 gold medals, placing third in the medal standings behind China and Japan. The baseball team clinched a gold medal by defeating Japan 3-1 in Toyohashi, avenging a previous 5-0 loss to a Japanese team. The decisive game saw South Korea score twice in the top of the eighth inning and maintain their lead.
Seventeen-year-old Kang Jun-i made history by becoming the first South Korean to win an Asiad gold in skateboarding. He triumphed in the men's street event with a total of 180.85 points, achieving the highest score of 92.40 points in the final trick round.
South Korea's women's handball team also emerged victorious, defeating Japan 27-23 to win their eighth Asiad gold and the first since 2018. The victory avenged a prior loss to Japan in the 2023 final.
The women's sabre team captured South Korea's fourth fencing gold medal by defeating Japan 45-31. The team included Jeon Ha-young, Choi Se-bin, Seo Ji-yeon, and Kim Jeong-mi.
In equestrian, Nam Dong-heon ended a 12-year gold medal drought for South Korea in the individual dressage event, scoring 75.190 points. Yu Jiayi of China took silver, and Aleksandra Maksakova of Palestine won bronze.
South Korea also succeeded in diving, earning two medals. Kim Su-ji and Kim Na-hyun won silver in the women's synchronized 3m springboard, while Shin Jung-whi and Kim Yeong-taek secured bronze in the men's synchronized 10m platform event.
