South Korean Ambassador to Australia Attends Defense Cooperation Meeting Amid Controversy

SEOUL — South Korea's Ambassador to Australia, Lee Jong-sup, participated in a defense cooperation meeting in Seoul on Thursday, amid growing criticism over his appointment and subsequent return from Canberra.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the meeting, which included ambassadors from six countries, focused on enhancing defense cooperation and arms exports. Lee's attendance comes after he returned to Seoul under scrutiny for alleged interference in a military investigation into a Marine's death. The interagency meeting, aimed at bolstering arms exports and strategic cooperation, also saw contributions from the Defense and Industry Ministers, highlighting the government's commitment to expanding its presence in the global defense market. Lee, who faced pressure due to a travel ban related to the investigation, had been in his diplomatic post for only 11 days before his return.
