South Korean Police Strengthen Hacking Investigation Team

Seoul:South Korean police announced an expansion of their team investigating a series of hacking attacks against financial institutions.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the National Office of Investigation has increased the team size by adding 15 personnel to the existing 28-member team. This expansion includes digital forensic experts to enhance the investigation and track the cyberattacks with international cooperation.

These efforts follow President Lee Jae Myung's directive to allocate more personnel and resources to address and mitigate the impact of the recent hacking incidents. Financial institutions such as Hana Bank, KB Kookmin Bank, and Shinhan Bank have been targeted in these attacks.

U.S. cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike reported that an unidentified hacker, potentially a Chinese speaker, used AI-powered tools to breach multiple South Korean financial institutions, stealing data in the process.

Korean cybersecurity company Logpresso noted that indicators suggest the suspect may be linked to Chinese-affiliated DDoS-for-hire groups like GodNet and VITAS.
