Seoul: South Korea has marked several significant events in its modern history, ranging from diplomatic achievements to economic milestones and military developments. The country established diplomatic relations with Laos in 1995, and a year later, in 1996, it was admitted as the 29th member of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), reflecting its growing influence on the global stage. According to Yonhap News Agency, North Korea has been a recurring focus in inter-Korean and international relations. In 2002, North Korea officially rejected a U.S. demand to dismantle its nuclear program, instead calling for a non-aggression treaty with the United States, highlighting the ongoing tensions on the Korean Peninsula. By 2010, the heir apparent of North Korea joined his father, Kim Jong-il, and a top Chinese general in Pyongyang for a mass rally, celebrating the longstanding military alliance between North Korea and China. In 2004, South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun announced he would not contest the Constitutional Court's decision against relocating the country's administrative capital from Seoul, though he pledged to pursue balanced regional development through alternate projects. In 2013, North Korea returned six South Korean men and the body of a South Korean female at the border village of Panmunjom, following reports that the individuals had entered the North illegally. The year 2015 witnessed emotional family reunions as hundreds of South Koreans met their North Korean relatives at Mount Kumgang in North Korea, despite heightened tensions from a North Korean patrol boat's intrusion over the Yellow Sea's demarcation line. In a move towards easing military tensions, 2018 saw South and North Korea complete the disarmament process in the Joint Security Area of the Demilitarized Zone, withdrawing military posts, armed troops, and firearms as part of an inter-Korean military agreement. The passing of Lee Kun-hee, the chairman of Samsung Group, in 2020 marked the end of an era for South Korea's largest conglomerate. Lee, who had been incapacitated since a heart attack in 2014, was a pivotal figure in transforming Samsung into a global technology leader.
