SEOUL: South Korea's top military official, Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Adm. Kim Myung-soo, has canceled his planned trip to the United States due to recent aggressive actions by North Korea, including the destruction of key roads near the border, sources informed on Wednesday. According to Yonhap News Agency, Adm. Kim was scheduled to fly to the United States on Tuesday to participate in a senior-level military meeting. However, the plan was altered to a virtual format in response to North Korea's recent detonations along the inter-Korean border. This decision reflects heightened security concerns following North Korea's hostile activities. On Tuesday, North Korean forces demolished segments of the western Gyeongui and eastern Donghae roads, which are located just north of the Military Demarcation Line that divides the two Koreas. These roads are crucial for direct connectivity between South and North Korea, and their destruction marks a significant escalation in tensions. The source explained, "Consid ering the situation where North Korea is increasing threats against the South, such as blowing up the Gyeongui and Donghae Lines, the in-person meeting was changed to a virtual one to maintain readiness." This move follows a series of provocative statements and actions by North Korea. Last week, the North Korean military declared its intention to sever all road and railway connections with South Korea and commenced construction of defensive structures along the front lines, aiming to 'completely separate' its territory from the South. Relations between the two Koreas have been particularly strained since late last year when North Korean leader Kim Jong-un described the inter-Korean relationship as one between "two states hostile to each other," dismissing any potential for reconciliation or unification. The tension escalated further with North Korea's claim last Friday that South Korean drones had repeatedly flown over Pyongyang this month, a claim that the South Korean military has neither confirmed nor d enied.
