SEOUL: Starbucks Korea announced its collaboration with KB Kookmin Bank to roll out account-based settlement services by the first quarter of the next year, marking a significant step in enhancing customer convenience. According to Yonhap News Agency, the partnership will allow customers who have their bank accounts linked to KB Kookmin Bank's open banking settlement system to utilize their account deposits for payments at Starbucks locations across Korea. This integration aims to streamline the payment process, enabling a more efficient transaction experience for customers. To utilize these services, customers must register their account number within the Starbucks mobile application. This move is part of Starbucks Korea's broader strategy to incorporate more digital convenience into their services, reflecting an adaptation to the increasing reliance on technology in consumer transactions. Starbucks first entered the Korean market in 1999 by opening its inaugural store in Seoul, in collaboration with the Shinsegae Group. Initially focusing on the Seoul metropolitan area, Starbucks has expanded across the nation, now operating 1,937 outlets. The coffee giant's significant growth in Korea underscores the country's growing coffee culture and the brand's successful localization strategy. Ownership of Starbucks Korea is split between Shinsegae Group, which holds a 67.5 percent stake, and the Government of Singapore Investment Corp. (GIC), which owns the remaining 32.5 percent. This partnership with KB Kookmin Bank represents another strategic move to cement Starbucks' presence and operational efficiency in the Korean market.
