LOIRE VALLEY, FRANCE — The world-renowned soprano Sumi Jo has inaugurated her first international vocal competition, the Sumi Jo Vocal Competition, at the historic Chateau de la Ferte-Imbault, attracting a global array of young, aspiring singers.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the competition began last Sunday and spanned seven days, featuring participants from around the world. Sumi Jo expressed her joy and disbelief at the realization of her long-held dream, marking it as a historic moment in her illustrious career. The event was particularly geared toward supporting emerging vocal talents from Asia and South America, providing them with a platform to showcase their abilities and gain recognition in the European classical music scene.
The competition saw an impressive turnout with 500 vocalists from 47 nations, narrowing down to 24 candidates for the main competition. Chinese baritone Zihao Li clinched the first place, followed by Romanian tenor George Ionut Virban and Korean tenor Lee Kiup. The winners were announced on Saturday, with substantial prizes awarded: 50,000 euros for the first place, 20,000 euros for second, and 10,000 euros for third. Beyond the monetary rewards, the winners will receive extensive ongoing support from Sumi Jo, including casting assistance, album production, and opportunities to perform in her concerts.
Jo highlighted the enthusiastic participation and high skill level of the contestants, noting that the event also served as a cultural exchange, fostering friendships and shared experiences among the finalists who stayed at the estate. She emphasized that the competition seeks individuals who not only possess musical talent but also a clear vision and ability to connect with audiences effectively on stage.
The next edition of the Sumi Jo Vocal Competition is slated for 2026, aligning with the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations between France and Korea, promising another enriching edition of this culturally significant event.
