Seoul: Kiwoom Heroes rookie Yeo Dong-wook, at just 18 years old, concluded his first preseason in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) with notable performances, hitting home runs in both his initial and final exhibition games. Yeo’s first home run came during his debut at-bat on March 8, and he closed the preseason by hitting a decisive solo home run against Lotte Giants’ closer Kim Won-jung, securing a 3-2 victory for the Heroes at Gocheok Sky Dome.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Yeo’s two home runs were the only ones he hit throughout the month, yet he was the sole rookie in the league to achieve more than one, showcasing potential beyond his expected defensive role as a third baseman. Despite his success, Yeo remains grounded, acknowledging the challenges he faces as he prepares for the regular season.
Demonstrating his potential, Yeo managed to hit an All-Star pitcher on a 0-2 count, hinting at a promising future. “He’s such a great pitcher and I figured he would challenge me,” Yeo commented, reflecting on his unexpected success.
The Kiwoom Heroes led the preseason with 13 home runs, aided by the mentorship of former big league players Yasiel Puig and Ruben Cardenas. Yeo appreciates the contrasting styles of his mentors, with Puig’s approachable nature and Cardenas’ thoughtful advice helping him develop his game. A key piece of advice from Cardenas emphasizes stepping into the batter’s box with clear intent, a strategy that has positively influenced Yeo’s performance.
Yeo’s transition from high school to the KBO is marked by increased competition, requiring him to maintain focus and adapt to the higher caliber of pitching. Despite the pressure, Yeo is likely to be the Opening Day third baseman for the young and rebuilding Heroes team, thanks to his defensive skills and perseverance.
Reflecting on his preseason experiences, Yeo appreciates the opportunities given by Heroes manager Hong Won-ki, who has shown patience and support. Yeo’s determination and resilience were evident in a recent game where he made a daring catch, falling into the third base dugout but emerging unscathed.
As Yeo anticipates the regular season, he looks forward to potentially playing his first game in his hometown of Daegu against the Samsung Lions, expressing a commitment to do whatever it takes to secure a victory.
