GWANGJU: The Kia Tigers orchestrated a decisive seventh-inning surge to claim a 5-1 victory over the Samsung Lions in the delayed opening game of the South Korean baseball championship series. The match, which unfolded at Gwangju-Kia Champions Field, concluded approximately 48 hours after its initial start in the city of Gwangju, located 270 kilometers south of Seoul. According to Yonhap News Agency, the game, which marked the first postseason suspension in Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) history, was halted due to rain on Monday night. The Lions were leading 1-0 following a solo home run by Kim Hun-gon off Tigers starter James Naile, just before the suspension. The Lions had two runners on base with no outs when play was paused, with Kim Young-woong facing reliever Jang Hyun-sik. Upon resumption, Jeon Sang-hyun replaced Jang, and the Lions were unable to score in the sixth inning, paving the way for the Tigers' rally in the seventh. The teams initially planned to resume the game and proceed with Game 2 o n Tuesday. However, inclement weather and field conditions necessitated a further postponement to Wednesday. Game 2 is slated to begin later on Wednesday at the same venue. Historically, winning Game 1 has proven advantageous in the Korean Series, with victors going on to secure the title in 29 out of 40 instances, excluding the 1982 series, which began with a tie. Despite the odds now favoring the Tigers, recent champions have demonstrated resilience in overcoming initial setbacks to ultimately prevail. In the resumed matchup, Jeon Sang-hyun effectively stifled the Lions' offense in the sixth inning, aided by catcher Kim Tae-gun's alert play. Jeon subsequently struck out Park Byung-ho and managed to escape a bases-loaded situation by inducing a groundout from Lee Jae-hyeon. Lions starter Won Tae-in had delivered five scoreless innings before the suspension, and left-handed reliever Lee Seung-hyun struck out the side in the sixth upon resumption. However, the Lions squandered another scoring chance in the seventh inning. The Tigers capitalized on the Lions' missed opportunities, scoring four runs in the bottom of the seventh. A wild pitch by reliever Lim Chang-min allowed Kim Sun-bin to tie the game, followed by another wild pitch that gave the Tigers the lead. Socrates Brito and Kim Do-yeong added crucial RBIs to extend the Tigers' advantage, with Kim Tae-gun's RBI double sealing the scoring. The Tigers' bullpen, including Jeon and Kwak Do-gyu, effectively contained the Lions, while closer Jung Hai-young secured the win by retiring the side in the ninth inning.
