Seoul: U.S. President Donald Trump announced Monday that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has responded to his dialogue overture, following his directive to the Pentagon to "substantially" reduce South Korea-U.S. military exercises. These exercises have been a point of contention, with Pyongyang viewing them as rehearsals for war. According to Yonhap News Agency, Trump's comments were made during a press availability at the White House. This development comes amid speculation that the reduction of military exercises could pave the way for renewed dialogue with North Korea. However, there remains uncertainty about whether North Korea will engage in diplomacy, given its increasing cooperation with Moscow. When asked by a reporter about Kim's response to his overture, Trump confirmed that communication had been received, stating, "Yeah, he has." Trump also mentioned that Kim "has always treated me with great respect," highlighting the diplomatic rapport they established during his first term. The two leaders me t three times in person: in Singapore in June 2018, in Hanoi in February 2019, and at the inter-Korean border village of Panmunjom in June 2019.
