Shenzhen:Washington U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he might meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-un during his upcoming visit to Asia, suggesting a potential revival of summit diplomacy between the United States and North Korea.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Trump responded to a reporter's question at the White House about the possibility of meeting Kim by saying, "I may," and added, "That'll be exciting, won't it? But I get along with him." Trump is set to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Shenzhen, China, on November 18-19.
In August, Trump expressed his desire to meet Kim later this year, fueling speculation about a renewed attempt to engage in personal diplomacy with the North Korean leader. This approach previously led to three bilateral meetings in Singapore in June 2018, in Hanoi in February 2019, and at the inter-Korean border village of Panmunjom.
During a campaign rally in Ohio on Saturday, Trump emphasized his good relationship with Kim Jong-un, highlighting the importance of maintaining positive relations with leaders of nuclear-armed countries. Additionally, State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott stated that Trump does not view discussions with North Korea as a "concession" and is open to engaging Pyongyang if it aligns with U.S. national interests.
