SEOUL: The chief of South Korea’s taekwondo governing body has revealed that U.S. President-elect Donald Trump promised to address Congress in a taekwondo uniform if he were to be reelected. This announcement came as part of a congratulatory message to Trump on his reelection, delivered by Lee Dong-sup, president of the World Taekwondo Headquarters, also known as Kukkiwon.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee Dong-sup shared details of his conversation with Trump during a phone interview. He recalled meeting with Trump in November 2021 at the Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, where they discussed various topics, including the South Korea-U.S. alliance and efforts towards inter-Korean peace. During this meeting, Lee presented Trump with an honorary ninth-dan certificate and a taekwondo uniform, acknowledging his interest in the martial art.

Lee noted that Trump assured him of his commitment to contributing to inter-Korean peace and expressed his intention to don the taekwondo uniform during a speech to Congress
if reelected. Furthermore, Lee conveyed his hopes that Trump would significantly contribute to peace efforts in the Republic of Korea and play an active role in promoting the development and spread of taekwondo across the United States.
