Seoul: U.S. Ambassador to South Korea Michelle Steel announced on Monday that she has met with Second Vice Foreign Minister Kim Jina to discuss the implementation of trade and security agreements reached by the presidents of the two countries last year.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Steel expressed in a post on X that she had "a great meeting" with Kim "to discuss the implementation of our Presidents' agreements from the Joint Fact Sheet." This meeting is part of ongoing efforts to ensure the successful realization of commitments made during the summit between President Lee Jae Myung and U.S. President Donald Trump.
Kim, in a separate post on X, conveyed her positive experience of meeting Steel for the first time last Friday. She noted Steel's extensive experience and understanding of Korean society, expressing confidence that the ambassador would act as a vital link between the two nations.
The joint fact sheet, established after last year's summit, includes various bilateral commitments in areas such as trade, investment, and security. Among these is South Korea's pledge to invest US$350 billion in the United States. Additionally, discussions are ongoing regarding potential revisions to the Korea-U.S. nuclear energy agreement, known as the 123 Agreement, to permit South Korea to enrich uranium, reprocess spent fuel, and advance its nuclear-powered submarine development.
Since commencing her official duties in August, Steel has engaged in numerous meetings with senior officials to address key issues related to security, trade, and the broader bilateral alliance between the United States and South Korea.
