Washington: The United States has expressed confidence that the South Korean people will resolve the recent “episode” involving President Yoon Suk Yeol’s brief imposition of martial law in a peaceful and democratic manner, according to a White House official.

According to Yonhap News Agency, National Security Council (NSC) spokesperson Sean Savett conveyed these remarks through a social media post. This statement followed the reporting of an impeachment motion against President Yoon to the National Assembly’s plenary session, setting the stage for a full-house vote later in the week.

Savett emphasized, “The ROK is demonstrating democratic resilience. We are confident the people of Korea will resolve this episode peacefully, democratically, and constitutionally,” using the Republic of Korea’s official name. He also highlighted that democratic values and the rule of law are fundamental to the U.S.-ROK alliance.

Additionally, Savett noted Washington’s serious concern over President Yoon’s martial law declarat
ion, which was subsequently withdrawn after a vote by the National Assembly. Following the lifting of martial law, the NSC spokesperson expressed relief that President Yoon reversed his decision and respected the legislature’s authority to terminate the order.
