U.S. Professor Questioned Over Alleged Defamation of South Korean President

Seoul: Morse Tan, a Korean American professor at U.S.-based Liberty University, has been questioned by police over his alleged defamation of President Lee Jae Myung, his lawyers confirmed on Friday. The questioning session, which lasted two hours, took place privately on Thursday.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Tan is accused of making false claims during a press conference in the United States last year. He allegedly stated that President Lee was involved in a murder as a teenager and had been sent to a juvenile detention center for the offense. Tan's lawyers have indicated that they do not anticipate further questioning.

Initially scheduled for questioning on Wednesday, Tan requested a change due to concerns over media exposure. After arriving in the country on May 28 to observe the June 3 local elections, Tan did not comply with earlier police summons, resulting in police requesting a travel ban. The justice ministry subsequently barred him from leaving South Korea until Tuesday.
