Seoul: Unification Minister Chung Dong-young met with the newly appointed Irish Ambassador to South Korea, Sean Hoy, to discuss potential strategies for advancing peace on the Korean Peninsula, as confirmed by the Ministry of Unification on Friday.
According to Yonhap News Agency, during the meeting, Minister Chung emphasized the potential role Ireland could play in fostering European understanding and support for peace on the peninsula. He highlighted Ireland's position as the rotating chair of the European Union for the latter half of the year as a significant opportunity for leadership in this area.
Minister Chung drew parallels between Ireland's historical struggle for independence and its resolution of the conflict in Northern Ireland, suggesting that the two Koreas might draw valuable lessons from Ireland's dedication to achieving peace.
In response, Ambassador Hoy expressed strong support for South Korea's peace initiatives. He shared insights derived from Ireland's peace process, indicating a willingness to collaborate with any nation eager to learn from Ireland's experiences. Hoy reiterated that the pursuit of peace remains a worthy endeavor.
Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to working towards peace on the Korean Peninsula, grounded in a shared understanding of the challenges of division and the critical importance of restoring peace, as noted by the ministry.
