Washington: The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) announced that South Korea and the United States have agreed to pursue “expedient and meaningful” progress toward achieving “reciprocal and balanced” trade. This agreement was reached during a bilateral meeting held in Washington, attended by USTR Jamieson Greer and Ahn Duk-geun, South Korea’s minister of trade, industry, and energy.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the meeting was described as “productive” by the USTR. The discussions revolved around South Korea’s efforts to obtain exemptions and exceptions from the Trump administration’s “reciprocal” and sectoral tariffs. Ambassador Greer emphasized the priorities of President Trump’s America First Trade Policy, while both parties recognized the importance of progressing toward a balanced trade relationship.
The meeting concluded with an agreement to initiate technical discussions between the USTR and South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy (MOTIE) in the following week. Additionally, Greer confirmed his participation in the
upcoming ministerial Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting, scheduled to take place on South Korea’s southern resort island of Jeju.
