New York: Second Vice Foreign Minister Kang In-sun will travel to New York early next week to attend U.N. sessions on peace operations and Syria's political situation, the foreign ministry said Thursday. During the four-day trip, starting Sunday, she will participate in the U.N. Security Council's (UNSC) high-level open debate on U.N. peace operations and a briefing on the situation in Syria, where negotiations are under way to resolve a decade of civil war.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the UNSC's open debate, set for Monday, will include discussions on "enhancing the adaptability of U.N. peace operations to address changing realities and ways to strengthen U.N. peace operations," ministry spokesperson Lee Jae-woong said in a press briefing. Kang will then attend the UNSC briefing on Syria's political and humanitarian situation Tuesday. She is expected to urge the implementation of an inclusive political process in the Middle Eastern country.
During her visit, Kang also plans to meet with senior U.N. officials and engage with Korean nationals working in international organizations, the ministry added.
