Accra: South Korea's expertise in smart infrastructure and advanced technologies is set to play a pivotal role in the development of a smart industrial park in Ghana. The initiative aims to establish a long-term connection between South Korea and Africa, as stated by Victor Lawrence, the head of the project.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Lawrence leads Vilacesti, a project focused on developing a smart industrial, science, and technology park in Ghana's Greater Accra Region. In a recent interview, he outlined the project's vision, which blends smart infrastructure, advanced manufacturing, AI-driven technologies, startup incubation, education, research collaboration, and international partnerships. This vision is designed to position both Ghana and Africa for future industrial growth, particularly emphasizing collaboration with Korea.
Vilacesti has acquired approximately 1,000 acres of land near Accra and is building strong relationships with stakeholders in both South Korea and Ghana. The project is actively engaging with potential investors and partners to realize its goals. Lawrence highlighted the plan to create a "Korea Technology Town," which would assist Korean companies with market entry, supply chain integration, and local partnerships.
Lawrence emphasized that Vilacesti is intended to be a practical entry point for Korean businesses, including small and medium-sized enterprises and startups, into the African market. He stressed the significance of collaborative efforts in establishing a sustainable connection between the two regions.
The project is expected to become operational in the next decade, creating over 100,000 jobs and contributing to Ghana's industrial transformation and economic growth. Lawrence noted the mutual benefits of the partnership, with Korea offering experience in industrialization, technology, education, and infrastructure development, while Africa provides youthful energy, growing markets, and substantial future potential.
Reflecting on his engineering background in Ghana, Lawrence expressed his commitment to supporting both his country and the broader African continent. He believes that sustainable prosperity cannot be achieved solely through raw material exports or foreign aid dependence. Drawing inspiration from Korea's success story, Lawrence emphasized the importance of human capital over natural resources, advocating for Africa's advancement through smarter, more connected development strategies.
