Seoul: A woman in her 50s has been arrested for spreading false information accusing prominent politicians of committing crimes, such as sex and drug trafficking, police said Friday. The Seoul Yeongdeungpo Police Station announced the 55-year-old suspect, whose identity is being withheld, was sent to the prosecution Friday morning on charges of defamation under the information and communications network law.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the woman is accused of making false claims on her social media account on three occasions between August and September 2024. She alleged that certain politicians, who had served as party and floor leaders, were involved in heinous activities including murder, sexual crimes, and corruption.
Her posts included accusations that a specific lawmaker consumed drugs at a prostitution establishment and committed murder, another accepted bribes amounting to hundreds of billions of won, and a third sexually assaulted dozens of individuals.
The police investigation was initiated following complaints from the concerned political parties. The woman was subsequently arrested last week. Authorities have refrained from identifying the alleged victims to prevent any potential secondary harm.
