SUWON — Prosecutors have summoned former leader of the Democratic Party, Lee Jae-myung, and his wife, Kim Hye-kyung, for questioning regarding their alleged misuse of a corporate credit card during Lee's tenure as governor of Gyeonggi Province.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the Suwon District Prosecutors Office notified Lee last Thursday about the upcoming questioning session, which concerns accusations of breach of duty. The prosecutors' office described the summons as a standard procedure aimed at allowing the accused to present their side of the story.
The allegations against Lee and his wife involve the personal use of a corporate card from 2018 to 2019, where they allegedly instructed a provincial official, surnamed Bae, to purchase food items with the card. This case came to light following accusations by another former provincial government employee, resulting in Bae's indictment on charges related to the Public Official Election Act and his subsequent two-year suspended sentence.
This inquiry marks Lee's seventh interaction with prosecutors. Previously, Lee faced questioning for corruption allegations linked to development projects in the Daejang-dong and Wirye districts and was accused of offering favors in exchange for corporate donations to the Seongnam FC football club. Additionally, last month, Lee was indicted for his alleged role in an unauthorized $8 million transfer to North Korea, a charge he has vehemently criticized as lacking common sense.
