SEOUL— The South Korean government is taking steps to enhance its longstanding alliance with the United States, irrespective of the upcoming U.S. presidential election results. The Foreign Ministry announced on Wednesday that it is actively working to solidify the bilateral relationship through broader engagement with U.S. political and policy-making circles.
According to Yonhap News Agency, South Korea is "closely monitoring" the U.S. election trends and is engaged with various American communities through established networks. The ministry emphasized its commitment to reinforcing the alliance by managing these relationships systematically. "The South Korea-U.S. alliance enjoys bipartisan support and extends beyond governmental interactions to include robust economic and social exchanges," the ministry stated, underscoring the multifaceted nature of the partnership.
Further detailing its foreign policy agenda, the ministry addressed concerns regarding the increasing military cooperation between Russia and North Korea. It reaffirmed its stance on taking strong measures against any activities that compromise South Korean security and emphasized ongoing diplomatic efforts with China and the broader international community. The ministry is pushing for more strategic communications with China through high-level dialogues and policy discussions, aiming for a "healthy and mature" relationship.
Additionally, the ministry outlined plans to enhance relations with Japan, especially as the two countries approach the 60th anniversary of their diplomatic normalization.
