Seoul - A parliamentary committee approved a pro-labor bill known as the 'yellow envelope bill' and another bill regarding nationwide cash handouts on Wednesday.
According to Yonhap News Agency, which currently hold a majority in the legislation and judiciary committee, these measures were passed unilaterally during the committee's plenary session. The ruling People Power Party (PPP) members exited the meeting in protest. The approved cash handouts will range from 250,000 won (US$181) to 350,000 won. The 'yellow envelope bill' is a pivotal revision to the Trade Union and Labor Relations Adjustment Act, aimed at curbing the ability of companies to claim damages against legitimate labor union disputes. This legislative move follows a history of intense labor disputes, notably the high-profile strike at SsangYong Motor Co. in 2009, leading to substantial financial demands from the state and the company years later. The recent amendments aim to protect workers' rights more effectively and are scheduled for a vote in the full Assembly on Thursday.
