Rep. Lee Jae-myung, the former leader of South Korea's main opposition Democratic Party (DP), has significantly bolstered his chances of reclaiming the party's leadership after winning two more primary elections on Sunday.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee garnered over 80 percent of the votes in both Gwangju and South Jeolla Province, continuing his strong performance in the ongoing leadership primaries. To date, Lee has swept 89 percent of the vote in nine primaries held through Saturday, with only four more primaries to go. Lee's recent victories further entrench his position as the frontrunner in the race, which is set to conclude with a national convention on August 18 in Seoul, where the DP will officially announce its new leader and members of its Supreme Council.
