SEOUL — Senior diplomats from South Korea and Colombia convened on Monday to discuss ways to enhance their bilateral ties, focusing on economic cooperation and development aid. This meeting, the first in-person policy dialogue since 2020 due to the pandemic, was led by South Korea's First Vice Foreign Minister Kim Hong-kyun and his Colombian counterpart, Jorge Rojas Rodriguez.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the discussions covered a broad range of mutual interests, aiming to build on the historical friendship that dates back to Colombia's military support during the Korean War. The talks also marked a resumption of the high-level engagements that had shifted to virtual formats during the global health crisis.
During the dialogue, Vice Minister Kim emphasized the potential for increased South Korean involvement in Colombian infrastructure projects, citing past contributions to transportation and industrial development in Colombia. He expressed a desire for both nations to continue fostering a forward-looking partnership.
In response, Vice Minister Rojas highlighted the prospects for deeper cooperation in future-oriented sectors like renewable energy, hydrogen technology, and science and technology advancements. Both parties also committed to intensifying efforts to boost cultural and people-to-people exchanges, reinforcing the ties between the two nations.
Monday's policy talks symbolize a rejuvenation of the collaborative spirit between South Korea and Colombia, setting the stage for further cooperative endeavors in various fields of mutual interest.
