Seoul—The South Korean government has urged automakers to voluntarily provide information on the battery brands used in their electric vehicles (EVs), according to the Office for Government Policy Coordination (OPC). This recommendation follows several incidents involving EV fires, heightening public safety concerns.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the suggestion was made during a vice-ministerial meeting involving various EV-related ministries and agencies. The move is a response to recent safety incidents, including an explosion of an imported EV in Incheon that resulted in significant damage, and a fire in a parked EV in Geumsan. Although current regulations do not require disclosure of EV battery brands, major automakers like Hyundai Motor, Kia Motors, and Mercedes-Benz Korea have already started sharing this information voluntarily over the past week.
