S. Korea Designates Jeju Island as Urban Air Mobility Test Zone for Flying Taxis

JEJU: President Yoon Suk Yeol announced on Tuesday that Jeju Island will be designated as a test operation zone for urban air mobility (UAM), aiming to integrate flying taxis into the island's thriving tourism sector. According to Yonhap News Agency, during a policy debate session on Jeju Island, President Yoon outlined significant plans to transform Jeju into a hub for tourism and green energy. "The government will designate Jeju Island as a test operation zone for UAM, so-called flying taxis, to actively support its commercialization for tourism purposes," Yoon stated at the debate held at the Jeju Free International City Development Center. UAM utilizes electric vertical takeoff and landing technology to transport people and cargo in urban areas. Jeju, known for attractions such as Mount Halla and Seongsan Ilchulbong, is considered an ideal location for this innovative transportation system. Additionally, Yoon committed to collaboration with the self-governing province on the construction of a new port a nd a new airport on the island, aiming to establish Jeju as a center for maritime logistics and cruises. The government also revealed investment plans amounting to 56 billion won ($41 million) by 2026 for green hydrogen projects, and initiatives to launch pilot projects for recycling used electric vehicle batteries in agricultural equipment and energy storage systems. Green hydrogen, emphasized during the announcement, is produced using renewable energy sources like wind, solar, or hydropower, through a process called electrolysis. Furthermore, Yoon promised enhancements to healthcare services on the island. This includes designating major hospitals to meet growing demands for high-quality medical care and expanding infrastructure to better manage serious conditions and infectious diseases.
