Seoul: The presidential office welcomed the Constitutional Court's reinstatement of acting President Han Duck-soo on Monday, accusing the National Assembly of abusing its power to impeach government officials. Han returned to the role of the acting president, nearly three months after being impeached over his alleged role in suspended President Yoon Suk Yeol's Dec. 3 declaration of martial law, among other reasons.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the presidential office issued a press notice stating, "Today's decision reaffirms that excessive impeachments by the National Assembly are reckless and malicious political offensives." The statement expressed hope that Han's reinstatement would signal a return to normal governance.
Han's impeachment had been a point of contention, with debates about the balance of power between governmental branches. The court's decision to reinstate him is seen as a critical juncture in the ongoing political dynamics. The presidential office's response underscores the tension between the executive and legislative branches concerning the impeachment process.
