Government Unveils R&D Strategy Focused on AI and Regional Growth

Seoul: The government has announced plans to advance industrial research and development (R and D) initiatives, emphasizing artificial intelligence (AI) and balanced regional growth. The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources revealed the strategy, highlighting a 2 trillion-won (US$1.4 billion) support package for R and D projects. These projects aim to establish industrial complexes in the southern regions, particularly those embracing AI transformation in manufacturing sectors.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the ministry also intends to allocate 1.5 trillion won to enhance the competitiveness of the struggling chemical industry. This initiative is part of a broader goal to support the manufacturing sector in building 500 AI factories by 2030. Additionally, the government aims to develop AI models for self-driving cars and autonomous ships, alongside creating 10 humanoid robot models for industrial applications by the end of the following year.

Further, the Ministry plans to officially commence a 700 billion-won project to develop an on-device AI chip later this year. Vice Industry Minister Moon Shin-hak emphasized the importance of industrial and technological competitiveness in the context of rising trade protectionism. According to him, these elements are crucial for safeguarding the nation's industry, economy, and national security.
