South Korea Clinches Baseball Gold at Asian Games with Pitcher Gwak Been’s Stellar Performance

Toyohashi:South Korea's baseball team secured its fifth consecutive gold medal at the Asian Games, defeating Japan at the Toyohashi Municipal Baseball Stadium. Gwak Been, a right-handed pitcher for the Doosan Bears in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO), played a pivotal role in the team's success. According to Yonhap News Agency, Gwak had a standout performance in this year's tournament, especially after not appearing in the previous Asian Games due to back spasms. In a critical preliminary round match, he pitched six shutout innings and struck out ten as South Korea defeated Chinese Taipei 5-0, a key victory against their main rivals for the title. Gwak's excellence continued in the gold medal game against Japan, where he allowed only one run on four hits over 6 1/3 innings, striking out nine. His efforts helped South Korea secure a 3-1 win. Although Japan tied the game in the seventh inning, South Korea regained the lead with two runs in the eighth, thanks to Gwak's teammates stepping up offensively. Relievers Jo Byeong-hyeon and Park Yeong-hyun successfully maintained the lead, sealing the victory for South Korea. Gwak's performance was instrumental, as he threw 111 pitches, just two fewer than his season high in the KBO. Even while competing internationally, he remains at the top of the KBO with a 2.26 ERA and 186 strikeouts, solidifying his reputation as one of the league's best pitchers.
