Son Heung-min Sets New Record as South Korea’s All-Time Leading Goal Scorer

Yongin:Son Heung-min has become South Korea’s all-time leading goal scorer in men's football, achieving this milestone during a friendly match against Uzbekistan. Son's 59th career goal came from a free kick in the sixth minute at Yongin Mireu Stadium, surpassing the previous record held by former striker Cha Bum-kun.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Son's achievement comes after he matched Cha's record the previous week with a goal against Uruguay. At 34 years old, Son has also become the most-capped male player for South Korea with 151 appearances. Despite being substituted in the 71st minute, South Korea secured a 2-0 victory over Uzbekistan.

Son expressed his gratitude after the match, acknowledging the support from his teammates, coaches, and fans. He highlighted the importance of every moment with the national team, stating that he is more pleased with the team's victory and clean sheet than his personal milestone.

Reflecting on his record-setting achievement, Son mentioned feeling no pressure in breaking Cha's record, attributing his success to the support from his teammates. He expressed hope that his record would be surpassed by an even better player in the future and shared his admiration for Cha Bum-kun.

Son Heung-min's international career began on December 30, 2010, against Syria, and since then, he has played in multiple FIFA World Cups and Asian Cups.
