Arms Agency to Expedite Nuclear Submarine and AI Combat System Development

Seoul:The arms procurement agency announced plans to accelerate the development of nuclear-powered submarines and the acquisition of artificial intelligence-based combat assets, including unmanned and counter-drone systems.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) revealed this strategy during a parliamentary audit. This initiative is part of a comprehensive roadmap aimed at securing essential capabilities for a "self-reliant" defense, as Seoul seeks to regain wartime operational control of its forces from Washington amidst North Korea's evolving military threats.

DAPA has stated it will utilize existing resources to develop a nuclear propulsion system and draft a plan for the construction of nuclear-powered submarines. Additionally, the agency intends to initiate a comprehensive acquisition of combat unmanned systems, such as uncrewed surface vessels and small attack drones. Efforts will also include the deployment of anti-drone networks, featuring laser air defense weapons and integrated counter-drone systems, particularly in front-line border areas.
