Chosun Ilbo and Reporter to Compensate Ex-Justice Minister Over Misused Illustration

SEOUL — The Seoul Central District Court has ruled that the Chosun Ilbo newspaper and one of its reporters must pay damages totaling 17 million won (US$12,490) to former Justice Minister Cho Kuk and his daughter for improperly using an illustration of them in an article unrelated to their actions.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Cho Kuk and his daughter Cho Min had sought 1 billion won in compensation, claiming that their images were featured in a Chosun Ilbo story discussing an unrelated case of robbery and prostitution in June 2021. The newspaper acknowledged the error and issued an apology two days following the publication of the article. The court has ordered the payment of 7 million won to Cho Kuk and 10 million won to his daughter. The illustration in question was originally created for a column that accused them of academic fraud.
