SEOUL—This fall at Frieze Seoul, the celebrated installation artist Do Ho Suh will join forces with his brother, architect Suh Eul-ho, to transform traditional Korean ink paintings by their late father, Suh Se-ok, into digital art displays using LG’s transparent OLED technology. The unique exhibition will blend art with advanced technology, illustrating a dynamic dialogue between past and present.
According to Yonhap News Agency, LG Electronics’ vice president of brand communication at LG Home Entertainment Co., during a press briefing in Seoul on Tuesday, the exhibition represents a significant collaboration within the Suh family. Oh described the project as a meaningful reinterpretation of Suh Se-ok’s artwork, who was a pioneer of abstract ink painting in Korea for over six decades. The elder Suh’s “People” series, known for its minimalist figures and vibrant use of space, will be digitally reimagined by Do Ho Suh on the new LG Signature OLED T, a transparent display not yet available commercially.
Last year, LG featured digital interpretations of works by Kim Whan-ki on their Signature OLED M at CES, highlighting the technology’s ability to preserve and enhance the nuances of traditional art. This year, the technology will bring a three-dimensional quality to two-dimensional ink paintings, as explained by Do Ho Suh, who aims to extend his father’s artistic legacy by merging it with contemporary media.
LG Electronics has committed to integrating art with technology through its OLED ART project since 2021, collaborating with artists like Anish Kapoor and Damien Hirst, and continuing its partnership with Frieze Seoul, which first premiered in September 2022. The art fair, in collaboration with the Galleries Association of Korea, coincides with Kiaf, South Korea’s leading art fair.
This year’s Frieze Seoul is set to occur from September 4-7.
