Seoul: The government will raise the terror alert starting later this week in the run-up to the inaugural summit between South Korea and five Central Asian nations set for next week, officials said Wednesday. The terror alert will be raised to the second-lowest level of "caution" on the four-tier scale for the whole country starting Friday and to the second-highest level of "alert" for Seoul starting Sunday, three days before the First Korea-Central Asia Summit kicks off Wednesday for a three-day run.
According to Yonhap News Agency, under the heightened alert, immigration checks and police patrols will be strengthened, officials said. This measure comes as a precautionary step to ensure the safety and security of the summit participants and the general public.
The summit will see the participation of five Central Asian countries: Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan. This gathering marks a significant step in diplomatic relations between South Korea and these nations, aiming to enhance cooperation across various sectors.
