Heavy Rain Disrupts Activities in Gangwon Province; Mt. Seorak Trails Closed

Seoul: Heavy rain fell in Gangwon Province on Saturday, leading to the closure of high-altitude trails on Mount Seorak and causing disruptions to a local festival. The weather agency reported significant rainfall that affected the region throughout the day.

According to Yonhap News Agency, by 4 p.m., Misiryeong Pass had received up to 223 millimeters of rain, as reported by the Gangwon Regional Office of Meteorology. Although the heavy rain warning was lifted by 4 p.m. as the rainfall began to ease, strong winds and high waves continued to impact the waters off the east coast.

Earlier, the national park office at Mount Seorak restricted access to its high-altitude trails due to the heavy rain. In Gangneung, a coastal city that experienced substantial rainfall, the Gangneung Danoje Festival faced cancellations and rescheduling of some of its programs.

The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) had previously predicted that rain would persist across South Korea through Saturday evening, following heavy overnight downpours. The KMA also issued warnings for rough seas in southern and eastern waters, with waves expected to reach up to 5 meters in the East Sea through Sunday.
