Hyundai Motor Group to Unveil Hydrogen Vision at APEC CEO Summit

Gyeongju: Hyundai Motor Group plans to share its vision for the hydrogen business with the global business community at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) CEO Summit this week in South Korea, industry sources said Tuesday. The group will host a session titled “Hydrogen, Beyond Mobility: New Energy for Society” at the Gyeongju Arts Center on Thursday as part of the official program of the APEC CEO Summit to be held through Friday in Gyeongju, some 275 kilometers southeast of Seoul, according to the sources.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the session marks the sole program hosted by a South Korean conglomerate among the country’s four major business groups — Samsung, SK, Hyundai Motor, and LG — for the CEO summit event. During the session, Hyundai Motor Group is expected to present the current status of its hydrogen business and outline its vision for accelerating the global hydrogen industry’s development as part of its broader strategy to strengthen its leadership as a first mover in the field.

The Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment will represent the South Korean government at the event, while the World Hydrogen Council, a global CEO-level consultative body for the hydrogen sector, is also expected to attend. Hyundai Motor Group Vice Chairman Chang Jae-hoon serves as co-chair of the council.

Through the APEC CEO Summit, where business leaders from various sectors gather, Hyundai Motor is expected to lead discussions on global cooperation across the hydrogen ecosystem, including research and development (R and D), production, and certification. Hyundai Motor is a major player in the global hydrogen industry, having become the first automaker to mass-produce hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) in 2013.

The company unveiled the hydrogen-powered Initium concept car last year and launched the new Nexo, the first full redesign of its FCEV in seven years, in 2025.
