Seoul: An interagency task force investigating the involvement of public officials in former President Yoon Suk Yeol's martial law attempt is set to recommend disciplinary measures against a group of senior Army officers. This development was announced by the defense ministry on Monday.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the officers in question were identified as part of a group of 34 individuals who traveled from the Army headquarters in Gyeryong to Seoul. This movement occurred shortly after the National Assembly lifted the martial law decree on December 3 of the previous year. The bus carrying these individuals returned to its point of origin approximately 30 minutes after its initial departure.
The task force, established last month at the behest of Prime Minister Kim Min-seok's office, operates under the auspices of various ministries. It plans to request the ministry's general counsel bureau to enforce disciplinary actions against about 10 Army officers involved in the incident.
Currently, the task force is assessing the findings from an independent audit conducted by the defense ministry regarding the martial law events. Notably, Brig. Gen. Kim Sang-hwan, who headed the Army's legal affairs office and was present on the bus, was demoted to colonel as a result of the incident.
