Seoul: Justice Minister Jung Sung-ho submitted his resignation letter to Cheong Wa Dae on Tuesday, sources said, after overseeing the recent passage of legislation on stripping the prosecution of investigative authority.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the resignation letter was also submitted to the Ministry of Personnel Management. Jung reportedly cited health issues as a reason for his resignation, in addition to the completion of his significant work on prosecution reform legislation.
In his resignation letter, Jung emphasized that the new criminal justice system should be completed under new leadership. His departure comes after a notable period of reforms that aimed to reshape the investigative powers of the prosecution.
Jung had previously expressed his intent to resign, a move that was reportedly discouraged, if not outright rejected, by President Lee Jae Myung. This suggests that his departure marks a significant shift in the country's justice ministry, as the reforms he championed will now need to be carried forward by his successor.
