Seoul:On October 1, 1953, South Korea and the United States signed a mutual defense treaty, following the Armistice Agreement that concluded the Korean War.

In 1999, North Korean leader Kim Jong-il met with Chung Ju-yung, the founder of Hyundai Group, in Pyongyang. Their discussions focused on tourism and business ventures in North Korea. Chung passed away two years later.
