PARIS -- Two-time Olympic gold medalist Kim Woo-jin secured the top position in the men's individual archery ranking round at the Paris Olympics. Kim achieved a score of 686 points out of a maximum of 720 points at Les Invalides, securing the top seed for the individual tournament, which begins Tuesday with the round of 64.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the 32-year-old archer, who has previously won gold medals in the men's team event at the last two Olympics, is yet to win an individual medal. As the highest-ranking male archer from South Korea, Kim will also participate in the mixed team event alongside Lim Si-hyeon, the top female archer who set a world record with 694 points earlier on Thursday.
Kim's compatriot Kim Je-deok, a double gold medalist from the Tokyo Olympics, finished second with 682 points, while the third member of the South Korean team, Lee Woo-seok, ranked fifth with 681 points. The trio's combined score of 2,049 points placed South Korea at the top of the team rankings, earning them a bye to the quarterfinals of the team competition, scheduled for Monday.
South Korea has dominated men's team archery, winning the past two Olympic gold medals and producing the men's individual champion in 2012 and 2016. The nation leads the all-time Olympic archery medal table with 27 gold medals and 43 medals overall.
