Seoul: Maggie Kang, a Korean-Canadian director, will be awarded South Korea’s Okgwan (Jade Crown) Order of Cultural Merit for her contributions to enhancing the global profile of K-culture through her work on the Netflix animated film “KPop Demon Hunters,” as announced by the culture ministry.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the U.S.-produced animation blended K-pop elements with Korean shamanistic themes and achieved unprecedented success on Netflix, becoming the most-watched title in the platform’s history across both film and television categories. This success even surpassed that of the widely acclaimed “Squid Game.”
The Okgwan Order is recognized as the fourth-highest class among South Korea’s cultural decorations. The award will be presented during the 2025 Korea Content Awards ceremony at COEX in southern Seoul. The event is organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism alongside the Korea Creative Content Agency.
This year’s Korea Content Awards will honor 24 individuals and 15 works, celebrating their efforts in advancing the nation’s content industry.
