Landers Manager Lauds Veteran Slugger for Matching KBO Home Run Record

INCHEON — SSG Landers manager Lee Sung-yong expressed deep admiration for Choi Jeong after the veteran player equaled the Korea Baseball Organization's all-time home run record in a dramatic late-game moment on Tuesday night.

According to Yonhap News Agency, which tied him with former Samsung Lions star Lee Seung-yuop for the career record, was a pivotal experience. The home run not only marked a personal milestone for Choi but also capped a thrilling sequence that saw the Landers tie the game and then secure a win with a walk-off homer in the ninth inning against the Kia Tigers at Incheon SSG Landers Field.

Lee, who is in his first season as a manager and just 21 games into his tenure, described the event as the "best game of my life," citing the unexpected and dramatic nature of the home runs that evening. "Choi Jeong had such a dramatic home run. I can't imagine the pressure he must be dealing with," Lee stated in a pre-game press conference. He shared his empathy for Choi, reflecting on the intense scrutiny top athletes often face and his own approach to supporting his player during this high-pressure time.

The manager also discussed his cautious personal approach with Choi, aiming to give him space amidst the mounting pressure to break the record outright. Lee’s respect for Choi’s resilience under such conditions was evident as he hoped for the record-setting home run to come soon, perhaps even in the next game of the series against the Tigers.

Additionally, Lee commented on his observations of the team's dynamics and his satisfaction with the Landers' performance early in the season. Following a disappointing end to the previous season, Lee’s focus on detail and player welfare has been part of a broader effort to build on the franchise's historical success and foster a supportive team environment.
