POHANG — A memorial ceremony was held for a young Marine, surnamed Chae, who tragically lost his life last year while participating in a search operation for flood victims. The ceremony took place at the 1st Marine Division in Pohang, according to the Marine Corps.
According to Yonhap News Agency, The event commemorated the young conscript who was swept away by strong currents during a mission in the southeastern county of Yecheon on July 19. Chae's death prompted widespread criticism over the lack of adequate safety equipment provided to the soldiers, such as life jackets and ropes, during dangerous operations. Approximately 250 military personnel, alongside friends and family of Chae, attended the ceremony. Marine Corps Commandant Lt. Gen. Kim Kye-hwan, in his speech, honored Chae's bravery and dedication, describing him as a role model for fellow soldiers. A commemorative bust was unveiled during the event to honor his memory and service.
