Naver CEO Advocates for Sovereign AI to Foster Cultural Diversity

JEJU — During a business forum on Friday, the CEO of Naver Corp., South Korea's largest internet portal operator, emphasized the importance of developing sovereign artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to preserve cultural diversity in the digital age.

According to Yonhap News Agency, speaking at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry event in Jeju, Naver is committed to providing the technologies needed for nations and institutions to build their own sovereign AI systems. Sovereign AI, which is sensitive to various cultural and historical contexts, is seen as essential in an era where global AI models often provide homogenized responses. Choi underscored Naver's role in leading AI initiatives, particularly in non-English speaking regions, highlighting South Korea's unique position as one of the few countries, alongside China, to have developed a generative AI model from scratch. She also noted a recent meeting between Naver's founder and Nvidia's CEO, which focused on AI sovereignty.
