Pyongyang - North Korean state media reported on the opening of the Summer Olympic Games in Paris, marking the country's return to the Summer Olympics after an eight-year absence.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) sent a delegation led by Sports Minister Kim Il-guk to the Olympics, where 16 athletes are competing in seven sports, including wrestling, table tennis, boxing, and gymnastics. The coverage highlighted the "distinctive" opening ceremony held at the Seine River but provided few details on the participating athletes. This marks a significant return for North Korea, which did not participate in the Tokyo Olympics due to pandemic-related border closures and subsequently faced penalties from the International Olympic Committee, missing the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing as well.
