PARIS — South Korean fencer Oh Sang-uk clinched the gold medal in men's individual sabre at the Paris Summer Olympics, marking his nation's first gold of the games and establishing a historic milestone in his career.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Oh, ranked fourth globally, faced off against Tunisia's 14th-ranked Fares Ferjani in the decisive match held at the Grand Palais in Paris. The final score was 15-11, favoring Oh. This victory not only secured the first gold for South Korea at this year's Olympics but also made Oh the first South Korean man to win an individual sabre gold. His achievement adds a prestigious layer to South Korea's fencing history, previously highlighted by Kim Jung-hwan's two bronze medals in the same discipline.
Oh's victory was part of a broader success for South Korea on Saturday, the first day of medal events following the opening ceremony. He has now successfully claimed individual gold medals across all major competitions for Asian fencers, including the Olympics, the Asian Games, the world championships, and the Asian championships. Oh, who was also a member of the gold medal-winning team at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, aims to continue his success in the team events scheduled for Wednesday.
