Opposition Leader Lee Jae-myung Criticizes North Korea’s Cancellation of Military Agreement

SEOUL - Lee Jae-myung, the leader of South Korea's main opposition Democratic Party (DP), has strongly condemned North Korea's decision to nullify the 2018 military tension reduction agreement with South Korea.

According to Yonhap News Agency, The North Korean announcement, which came on Thursday, stated the restoration of all military measures previously halted under the deal. This development followed South Korea's partial suspension of the agreement in response to North Korea's successful launch of a military spy satellite.

During a DP leadership meeting, Lee Jae-myung expressed his concerns about the escalating situation, warning that the tit-for-tat actions by both Koreas could lead to uncontrolled tensions. He cautioned the South Korean government against taking measures that could jeopardize the peace process, comparing it to "killing a cow while trying to fix its horn."

Additionally, Lee suggested that Russia's decision to assist North Korea with its satellite launch might be a consequence of Seoul's adversarial stance toward Moscow. This claim follows a statement by the National Intelligence Service indicating that North Korea's successful satellite placement in orbit was likely aided by Russian technology, a development thought to be linked to a recent summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
