Pre-Election Claims by South Korea’s Major Political Parties

SEOUL — In the run-up to the April 10 general elections in South Korea, significant developments have emerged from the two leading political factions.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the ruling People Power Party (PPP) and the main opposition Democratic Party (DP) claim anticipated victories in 82 and 110 districts, respectively. These projections stem from their internal analyses and interpretations of recent opinion polls and public sentiment across all 254 electoral districts. However, neither party has declared a definitive lead in the remaining districts.

Hong Suk-joon, representing the PPP, expressed cautious optimism about their prospects, citing a perceived improvement in public support. Meanwhile, Kim Min-seok of the DP emphasized the importance of maintaining humility and vigilance despite positive trends in voter support. The Seoul metropolitan area, with its 122 parliamentary seats, has emerged as a critical battleground, with both parties reporting leads in specific districts. This contrasts with the previous election's outcomes, particularly in regions like Busan and the southeastern areas, where the PPP currently holds an advantage. Both parties also expressed confidence in achieving majority victories in various other regions, underlining the fiercely competitive nature of the upcoming elections.
